Construction of Hempcrete

Hemp Crete is created on site by using a motor mixer with a horizontal and vertical shaft to mix raw ingredients such as lime, sand, water, and industrial hemp in certain proportions. It needs 7-8 minutes to thoroughly mix this combination in order for it to have binding properties. The slurry is then poured into the mold for casting and firmly compacted to prevent air spaces. Then it is left to cure for a while. Hemp Crete is now suitable for usage.

What is hempcrete?

Bayou Bourbeaux Farm will grow fresh produce in climate-controlled greenhouses which will be made using Hemp Crete Structures. Hemp Crete is a non-structural, bio-composite construction material comprised of sand, lime, and hemp hurd. Hemp lime is another name for it. Hemp Crete has a density of 300 to 900 kg/m3 and a compressive strength of 1 MPa. Hemp Crete is a composite material made of hemp and concrete (i.e., lime is used as binding material, sand is used as fine aggregate and hemp hurd is used as a coarse aggregate).

Features of hempcrete are:
  • Hemp Crete has a great ability for absorbing moisture from the environment.

  • Its compressive strength is only about 1 MPa. As a result, it's used in small structural work like lightweight wall framing members.

  • Because it comprises polyester-type woody fiber, it is not fire-resistant.

  • According to American Standard, hemp Crete has an R-value of 2.4 to 3 per inch. The heat flow in hemp Crete walls is determined by the R-value. Thermal mass is a feature of hemp Crete (mass having inertia with thermal capacity). As a result, it is best used as an insulating material with thermal mass rather than as a thermal material.

  • Because hemp Crete is porous, it should only be coated with lime-based paints, which are costly.

  • Hemp Crete foundation walls are more durable and flexible than concrete foundation walls.

  • Hemp Crete hardens like petrified rocks after a period of time. Its strength and longevity make it soundproof and bulletproof.

  • It is blended on a building site. It has the unpleasant odor of a dead skunk.
